COME SHARE THE LOVE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

You Are Invited

I am Bishop Todd Bell and along with the community of Saint Matthias, I wish to welcome you and share the love of our Lord Jesus Christ with all we come in contact with. Spreading the Good News of salvation and anxiously awaiting His coming in glory!

The Community of Saint Matthias is committed to an inclusive approach, void of barriers between God and His people. Christ ministered to those in need, rather than those who were in “good standing” under the “law”. Christ more often than not was found in the company of the “untouchables”, healing the sick, giving sight to the blind and ministering to forbidden people such as the Samaritan woman.

The Church must minister to people through love and kindness; not fear and heavy handedness. We seek to do this through equality, justice and truth. This is done through strengthening with an understanding of God’s Holy Scriptures, renewal within the Holy Eucharist and an openness to the Holy Spirit as He speaks to and through His people.

“Hang On To Your Pearls”Today’s Gospel is a bit of a tricky one when we read it through our modern eyes. All too often, people subject themselves to environments and people who beat them down. Sacred Scripture speaks of us having unsurpassing worth/value, so why do we allow others to devalue us? This is the root of the first part of today’s Gospel. The second is one that we should all be familiar with, “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you”. The second is based on the law, “love your neighbor as yourself”. By maintaining our value and loving others, we will find our journey through the narrow gate that leads to eternal life.Jesus said to his disciples:“Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot, and turn and tear you to pieces.“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the Law and the Prophets.“Enter through the narrow gate;for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.” ... “Turn The Lens Around”It is so easy to look at others and see the fault. It is far more difficult to look in the mirror and be honest. As Christians, we are to temper everything we do with love, and to love is to put aside having a judgmental attitude. There are clearly things that I like and do not like, and therefore there are going to be people that I like or, in some cases, do not like, but I love them all. Love is far more powerful than like, and if we allow ourselves to love one another, the power of our love will conquer mountains of differences. Jesus calls us in today’s Gospel to love rather than judge. How we judge is how we will be judged. The only standard that matters is the standard set forth by God, and the last time that I checked, we have all sinned and fallen short. Let us be merciful to ourselves and, in like manner, find mercy to share with others.Jesus said to his disciples:“Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye,but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye?How can you say to your brother,‘Let me remove that splinter from your eye,’while the wooden beam is in your eye?You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam from your eye first;then you will see clearlyto remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.” ... “Revealed By Light”Fear comes from the unknown, and in many cases, dwelling on the unknown places us in a world of fear. Light dispels the darkness and reveals that which has been hidden there. What once brought fear now brings peace and understanding. In today’s Gospel reading, we are told to “Fear no one”. Jesus IS the light of the world, and as Christians, we are called to carry that light into the world. Why? To dispel the darkness of the world so that fear can give way to hope. Let the light of Christ shine forth from you this day, and may His presence in you give hope to those around you.Jesus said to the Twelve:“Fear no one.Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light;what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul;rather, be afraid of the one who can destroyboth soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin?Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge.Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.Everyone who acknowledges me before othersI will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others,I will deny before my heavenly Father.” ...
