COME SHARE THE LOVE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

You Are Invited

I am Bishop Todd Bell and along with the community of Saint Matthias, I wish to welcome you and share the love of our Lord Jesus Christ with all we come in contact with. Spreading the Good News of salvation and anxiously awaiting His coming in glory!

The Community of Saint Matthias is committed to an inclusive approach, void of barriers between God and His people. Christ ministered to those in need, rather than those who were in “good standing” under the “law”. Christ more often than not was found in the company of the “untouchables”, healing the sick, giving sight to the blind and ministering to forbidden people such as the Samaritan woman.

The Church must minister to people through love and kindness; not fear and heavy handedness. We seek to do this through equality, justice and truth. This is done through strengthening with an understanding of God’s Holy Scriptures, renewal within the Holy Eucharist and an openness to the Holy Spirit as He speaks to and through His people.

“The King Of Comfort”When I was young, my parents told me that they knew what was best for me. I did not always agree or understand, but the truth of the matter is and was that they were right. God is our Father, and we are His children. He, without question, knows what is best for us even when we do not agree or understand. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the disciples about His impending return to the Father, and He goes on to explain why this is necessary. The disciples did not want Him to leave, yet He knew what was best for them and for us. He promised that the Advocate (the Holy Spirit) would come, and when He comes, He will convict of sin, righteousness, and condemnation. Our God is a lot of things, and one of those is the King of Comfort.Jesus said to his disciples:“Now I am going to the one who sent me,and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts. But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go.For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you.But if I go, I will send him to you.And when he comes he will convict the worldin regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation:sin, because they do not believe in me;righteousness, because I am going to the Fatherand you will no longer see me;condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.” ... “A Friend Is On The Way”Abandonment is one of the greatest struggles known to human nature. It threatens and impacts all relationships. Jesus knew that His return to the Father had the potential to impact the Apostles and disciples with abandonment issues. In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus tells them and us that He is sending a friend our way. One who will testify on His behalf, encourage and empower the faithful, and stand with us in times of trial and tribulation. The world is not our friend. It did not accept Jesus, and it will not accept us. Do not be disillusioned by the cunning nature of the world; Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He has not abandoned us; rather, He has sent us a friend for life!Jesus said to his disciples:“When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father,he will testify to me.And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.“I have told you this so that you may not fall away. They will expel you from the synagogues;in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills youwill think he is offering worship to God.They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me.I have told you this so that when their hour comesyou may remember that I told you.” ... “A Right Life”The Bible tells us that Satan is the accuser of the brethren. He has come to steal, to kill, and to destroy. Jesus, on the other hand, has come to give us new life. Jesus has come to restore, transform, and resurrect. If these are the examples, then we need to ask ourselves which one we are following. Have we become the accuser or the restorer? Are we out to destroy or to resurrect? The Gospel according to Luke, as well as Matthew, shares with us stories of forgiveness beyond what our flesh would see as reasonable, and yet the Lord tells us that this is how we are to forgive. Forgive those who have offended you and pray for those who persecute you. This is what it means to live as Jesus lived and to offer ourselves to Him daily.Luke 17:3-4 - Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he wrongs you seven times in one day and returns to you seven times saying, ‘I am sorry,’ you should forgive him.”Matthew 18:21-22 - Then Peter approaching asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. ... See MoreSee Less

“Expressions Of Love”How do we know love? The poet, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, wrote, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways”. Love is found through experiences and expressions. It is given and received, offered and reciprocated. In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus tells His disciples, “if you love me, you will keep my commandments”. He then offers them an expression of His love, “and I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always”. Love is a two-way street, and it requires both parties if it is to be effective. God does not call us to love Him as we wish; He calls us to love Him as He first loved us. Let us express our love of Christ by our way of life, just as He expressed His love for us by giving of His life.Jesus said to his disciples:“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him.But you know him, because he remains with you,and will be in you.I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.In a little while the world will no longer see me,but you will see me, because I live and you will live.On that day you will realize that I am in my Fatherand you are in me and I in you.Whoever has my commandments and observes themis the one who loves me.And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.” ...
