COME SHARE THE LOVE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

You Are Invited

I am Bishop Todd Bell and along with the community of Saint Matthias, I wish to welcome you and share the love of our Lord Jesus Christ with all we come in contact with. Spreading the Good News of salvation and anxiously awaiting His coming in glory!

The Community of Saint Matthias is committed to an inclusive approach, void of barriers between God and His people. Christ ministered to those in need, rather than those who were in “good standing” under the “law”. Christ more often than not was found in the company of the “untouchables”, healing the sick, giving sight to the blind and ministering to forbidden people such as the Samaritan woman.

The Church must minister to people through love and kindness; not fear and heavy handedness. We seek to do this through equality, justice and truth. This is done through strengthening with an understanding of God’s Holy Scriptures, renewal within the Holy Eucharist and an openness to the Holy Spirit as He speaks to and through His people.

“Let Jesus Speak To Your Storm”So often, we feel that it is our place to solve all of the problems. The Lord asks us to lay all of our problems before Him so that we might live in peace. In today’s Gospel, we find a familiar story, but do we find it common in our lives? Jesus has gone out onto the Sea and taken rest. A storm comes up, and the disciples are fearful of it, so they awaken Him and ask Him to save them. His response: “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” He then rebukes the storm, and there is a great calm. Jesus did this for His disciples, and He will do this for us if we are willing to lay down our problems before Him and accept His peace. Whatever the storm is in your life today, allow Jesus to speak to it and reside in the great calm which is the peace of Christ. As Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him.Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea,so that the boat was being swamped by waves;but he was asleep. They came and woke him, saying,“Lord, save us! We are perishing!”He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?”Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea,and there was great calm. The men were amazed and said, “What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?” ... “Who Do You Say That I Am”This question is one that most of us are familiar with from the Gospel message. How do we answer the question, though, with our words and deeds? Although Jesus asks the question of His disciples, it is a question that every believer must be able to answer. Sadly, too many answer as the disciples initially did, proclaiming what the world says of the Lord. This is not what the question asks. In the end, our lives by word and deed must proclaim the name of Jesus. Our faith cannot be a secret; it must be lived out daily, otherwise we are merely lukewarm Christians, and that subject is one for another devotional. When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippihe asked his disciples,“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”Simon Peter said in reply,“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” ... “Faith, Family, Fortune”There is a divine order to our lives. When our lives are in order, most things go smoothly, yet when they are out of order, we are dysfunctional. I once heard it said, “An apple a day will keep the doctor away, but 5 on Friday will not do the trick”. The divine order in our lives is God first, family second, and fortune third. God must come first in all that we are and all that we do. In today’s Gospel, Jesus addresses this in telling His apostles that, “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me”. This lesson is a difficult one, as our love of family tends to be strong. God approves of our love of family, yet He insists on being first in our lives. Let us set our priorities on the divine order of God and place Him above all else. In doing so, we will be blessed.Jesus said to his apostles:“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me,and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;and whoever does not take up his crossand follow after me is not worthy of me.Whoever finds his life will lose it,and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it."Whoever receives you receives me,and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophetwill receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous manbecause he is a righteous manwill receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives only a cup of cold waterto one of these little ones to drinkbecause the little one is a disciple—amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” ...
