COME SHARE THE LOVE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

You Are Invited

I am Bishop Todd Bell and along with the community of Saint Matthias, I wish to welcome you and share the love of our Lord Jesus Christ with all we come in contact with. Spreading the Good News of salvation and anxiously awaiting His coming in glory!

The Community of Saint Matthias is committed to an inclusive approach, void of barriers between God and His people. Christ ministered to those in need, rather than those who were in “good standing” under the “law”. Christ more often than not was found in the company of the “untouchables”, healing the sick, giving sight to the blind and ministering to forbidden people such as the Samaritan woman.

The Church must minister to people through love and kindness; not fear and heavy handedness. We seek to do this through equality, justice and truth. This is done through strengthening with an understanding of God’s Holy Scriptures, renewal within the Holy Eucharist and an openness to the Holy Spirit as He speaks to and through His people.

“Render Unto……..”Christians today severely struggle with submission to authority, yet Sacred Scripture speaks about the necessity for submission in many places. How we submit to the authority of the earth is evidence of how we will submit to the authority of Heaven. How we respect our earthly father and mother is evidence of how we will respect our Heavenly Father. In today’s Gospel reading, we find a story that most of us are very familiar with. Jesus is being tested/tricked by the Pharisees and Herodians as they ask him if it is lawful to pay tax to Caesar. Jesus, knowing all things, realizes that this is not a sincere question; it is yet one more attempt to trap Him. He responds with the consistent message of God. If it belongs to Caesar (the authority of the day), then give it to Caesar, and if it belongs to God, give it to God. In this passage, I am also reminded of a passage from the Old Testament where God says that He can even use evil men to accomplish His will. May we find ourselves obedient and respectful to authority so that we may evidence our reverence for God.,Some Pharisees and Herodians were sentto Jesus to ensnare him in his speech. They came and said to him,“Teacher, we know that you are a truthful manand that you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion. You do not regard a person’s statusbut teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?Should we pay or should we not pay?”Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them,“Why are you testing me?Bring me a denarius to look at.”They brought one to him and he said to them,“Whose image and inscription is this?”They replied to him, “Caesar’s.”So Jesus said to them,“Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesarand to God what belongs to God.”They were utterly amazed at him. ... “Transformation Through Surrender”So many times, in life, we strive to better ourselves through the virtues of self-provision. I can work harder, be stronger, live better, etc. The call of Jesus Christ in our lives is built upon surrender. We must surrender our will to His and, in doing so, open ourselves up to the virtue of grace. In today’s reading from Second Peter, we hear, “make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love”. The transformation of our lives is a process, and it is one that must be approached with intention and surrender.Beloved:May grace and peace be yours in abundancethrough knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has bestowed on useverything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of himwho called us by his own glory and power.Through these, he has bestowed on usthe precious and very great promises,so that through them you may come to share in the divine nature, after escaping from the corruption that is in the worldbecause of evil desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with self-control,self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love. ... “The Hope Of Heaven, Not The Fear Of Hell”The earthy way of persuasion is one driven mostly by fear. The Heavenly way of direction is driven by hope. Why do I love Jesus? Because He first loved me! In today’s Gospel reading, one that we are all very familiar with, we are reminded of why Jesus came to earth, to live and die as one of us, so that we might have eternal life. It also goes on to say that He did not come to condemn us, but so that we might be saved through Him. Condemnation comes from our own choices and not by the authority of God. Salvation comes through mercy and grace and not by any work of man. May we come to believe not out of fear, but out of hope in His Promise.God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,so that everyone who believes in him might not perishbut might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. ... “A Loving Relationship”What defines a loving relationship? Is it emotional? Is it physical? Is it spiritual? The answer is yes. A true and sincere loving relationship touches every essence of our being, AND it longs for more and more and more. Sacred Scripture tells us that “God is Love”; He does not merely love, but He is the very essence of love, and love is of His essence. In today’s Psalm, we hear of the longing for love and not just any love, but the love of all love, which is the love of God. If we have loved, it is only because God first loved us, and the acknowledgement of that calls us to resound, “My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God”.O God, you are my God whom I seek;for you my flesh pines and my soul thirstslike the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuaryto see your power and your glory,For your kindness is a greater good than life;my lips shall glorify you.R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.Thus will I bless you while I live;lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name.As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied, and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you.R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.You are my help, and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy.My soul clings fast to you;your right hand upholds me.R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. ... See MoreSee Less
