COME SHARE THE LOVE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

You Are Invited

I am Bishop Todd Bell and along with the community of Saint Matthias, I wish to welcome you and share the love of our Lord Jesus Christ with all we come in contact with. Spreading the Good News of salvation and anxiously awaiting His coming in glory!

The Community of Saint Matthias is committed to an inclusive approach, void of barriers between God and His people. Christ ministered to those in need, rather than those who were in “good standing” under the “law”. Christ more often than not was found in the company of the “untouchables”, healing the sick, giving sight to the blind and ministering to forbidden people such as the Samaritan woman.

The Church must minister to people through love and kindness; not fear and heavy handedness. We seek to do this through equality, justice and truth. This is done through strengthening with an understanding of God’s Holy Scriptures, renewal within the Holy Eucharist and an openness to the Holy Spirit as He speaks to and through His people.

“Has Your Salt Gone Flat?”So often when we first meet the Lord, we are excited and full of energy to share this newfound friend with others. Sadly, if our new relationship is not nurtured, the excitement begins to diminish. To have a sincere relationship with the Lord is never boring or mundane, but if we have only had a passing introduction, it can escape us. Today’s Gospel encourages us to live out the value of our relationship with Jesus daily. We are to let our light shine so that it can give light to others. If your salt has gone flat, come to the Lord, and He will restore it to the fullness of flavor.Jesus said to his disciples:“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anythingbut to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world.A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deedsand glorify your heavenly Father.” ... “Discipline And Reward”We often speak of the law of God, yet we could merely speak of the disciplines of God. God calls us to be a people of order, and that order is governed by disciplines according to the direction of God. In today’s Gospel reading, we hear one of the best-known sermons/teachings of Jesus in the Beatitudes. This teaching, given as part of the Sermon on the Mount, teaches us disciplines of life that bring about Heavenly rewards. Most people embrace the reward and yet reject the discipline. You cannot have one without the other. The Word of God calls us to embrace the discipline and enjoy the reward. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute youand utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.” ... “Holy Food for Holy People”There is food that feeds our stomach, and then there is food that feeds our soul. We have all heard that saying, “you are what you eat”. If we eat good food, our body will respond, and if we eat bad food, it will likewise be evidenced by our body. So it is with our soul. If we feed our souls with the things of this world, they will become malnourished, sick, and even die. Jesus has come to offer us food to feed our souls. Whether speaking to the Apostles or today as He speaks to the crowd, His message is the same: “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life within you.” This was difficult for people to accept then, and for many it is now. That difficulty does not negate the truth of the Word of God. God has given holy food for a holy people.Jesus said to the Jewish crowds:"I am the living bread that came down from heaven;whoever eats this bread will live forever;and the bread that I will giveis my flesh for the life of the world."The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying,"How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"Jesus said to them,"Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my bloodhas eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my bloodremains in me and I in him.Just as the living Father sent meand I have life because of the Father,so also the one who feeds on mewill have life because of me.This is the bread that came down from heaven.Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever." ... "He Desires Our Essence"How do we give ourselves to the Lord? Is it through a Sunday obligation? Is it through serving others? Is it through championing good causes? All of these things are good, yet in any of them are we giving of the very essence of our being? In today's Gospel reading, Jesus sits opposite the treasury and tells us the story of the "widow's mite". This is not a parable; it is a life-as-it-happens story. Jesus tells the people that the widow's offering is the greatest because most contribute from their surplus, but she, from her poverty (her very essence). How do we give ourselves to the Lord?May we come to give of our very essence! He sat down opposite the treasuryand observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums.A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents.Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them,“Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in morethan all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had,her whole livelihood.” ...
